Sergio Aguero has turned down the opportunity to wear Barcelona’s legendary No. 10 shirt, according to Albert Roger of the sport.
Aguero, one of Barcelona’s new signings, who wore the exact number for Manchester City before moving to Barcelona in the summer, second captain Gerard Pique was asked to take the number 10 shirt.
However, the former Manchester City striker rejected the possibility of taking over the number that became vacant due to Lionel Messi’s departure to Paris Saint-Germain.
Barcelona’s No. 10 shirt was worn by players such as Diego Maradona, Pep Guardiola, Hristo Stoichkov, Romario, Rivaldo, Riquelme, Ronaldinho.
Barcelona’s No.10 brand has become synonymous with Messi and Aguero may have rejected it due to all the stress that comes with the shirt.
With Aguero turning down the opportunity to wear the No. 10, it remains vacant with other reports suggesting Phillipe Coutinho could wear it this season if he stays at the club.
The Brazilian player is being linked away from the Camp Nou and La Liga rules place limits on usable equipment numbers, making it impossible for Barcelona to consider retiring the number.
Coutinho has reportedly been offered the jersey and could emerge as Barcelona’s new No. 10 in the coming days.
